SIX CORE LILY PADS

Being swamped with sickness is one way the body shouts "hey could we get a pause here?!"  So why ignore the body's call for help until the calls become too obnoxious to ignore? Because depending on how long the pattern has been going on, running on empty can feel natural. What predictably follows is heavy duty illness, then a brief swat at recovery and lastly the hazy belief that it will never happen again. Once the mud has been shaken off, it's easy to dismiss recently perishing and go full throttle on doing what's not working, yep again. (Just another wrestle of the toxic toad taking down the optimistic turtle). 

If one has interest, there are simple ways to stave off a return to toad...like not reaching out for a six pack, but instead the six core lily pads - what Bobby Williams (author & former stuntman) refers to as "Our Six Natural Doctors". 
He reminds us that they are available to us anytime & anywhere (which is appealing when one is sick & broke, in search of free activities).

Consider gratitude for these "mystical" lifelines - so often avoided and under appreciated:

1. Sleep

2. Nutrition

3. Outdoor Air

4. Water

5. Sun

6. Exercise


These natural lifelines to rebirth and optimism are symbolic of the lily pad. For me, they are the six core lily pads that motivate a swamp rescue from the bog of sick and sad.  
When engaged in "mindful breathing" (one of my new free activities), I'm reminded that the optimistic turtle within, can wrestle down the toxic toad, just like the dried up water lily returns to the waterways to create new life.  And I ponder which of these lily pads I haven't visited in awhile. 

Living in the Great White North, rather than a California beach, makes accessing natural sun a rare feat, let alone air that doesn't cause instant frostbite. So I resort to using a Seasonal Affective Disorder Lamp (usually remembering to use it after, instead of before, a great depression sets in). 
Mustering up some gratitude for clean water and clean body fuel helps not take the basics for granted and in turn elevates surprising effort to get the body moving. Being thankful for the opportunity to get a full night's sleep, actually makes an early bedtime seem not boring, as opposed to the usual pass out, crash & burn. 

Yes this may read like a mini tutorial in prevention (yawn), but anchoring self in these essential gifts of life, really bring it when it comes to bringing happy back.
